► Australian Government to apologise to members of the Stolen Generations
On 13 February, the Prime Minister of Australia, The Hon Kevin Rudd MP, will present on behalf of the Australian Government apologies to the Aboriginal Stolen Generations.
More than 100 members of the Stolen Generations have been invited to travel to Canberra as special guests of the Government to be presented a national apology. First generation survivors are among those who have been invited.
The Welcome to Country will be delivered by Elder Matilda House on behalf of the Ngunnawal people. This Welcome will carry national significance in symbolising a future of respect and partnership with Indigenous people of Australia.
“Once we establish this respect, the Government can work with Indigenous communities to improve services aimed at closing the 17-year life expectancy gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians,” said Jenny Macklin, Australian Minister for Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs.
The Australian Government has committed to a $ 261 million (€ 161 million) investment in improving Indigenous kid’s health and early development.
The national Australian broadcaster ABC will provide live to air coverage of the event (www.abc.net.au).
