The Agreement also encourages European participation in Australian research activities. The Joint Science and Technology Consultative Committee (JSTCC), established under the Agreement, meets regularly to exchange information and to discuss ways to enhance research collaboration. Following its meeting in 2008, Australia and the European Commission agreed on a Roadmap to Enhance Science and Research Cooperation (pdf, 238KB).

The Australian Government supports research cooperation through the Australia-Europe Research Collaboration Fund, a component of the International Science Linkages (ISL) program. Some of the mechanisms supported through this fund include the Forum for European-Australian Science and Technology cooperation (FEAST). This Australia-EU jointly funded dialogue platform promotes cooperation at the level of researchers and research stakeholders, raising awareness of cooperation opportunities in areas of mutual interest and benefit.

Researcher mobility is supported via Australian participation in the European Commission’s International Research Staff Exchange Scheme. Under this scheme the Australian Academy of Science provides, on a competitive basis, a contribution towards travel and subsistence costs for Australian research organisations to establish or reinforce long-term research co-operation through a joint program of short-term institutional staff exchanges of up to 12 months.

In addition, the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) - European Union Collaborative Research Grants program () assists Australian participation in projects selected for funding by the EU under its 7th Framework Program (FP7) that are of relevance to the NHMRC.

Moreover, during 2008 the Australian Research Council has opened up its fellowships to international candidates for all schemes, providing funding for eligible organisations to promote collaboration, movement and networking between Australia-based and overseas researchers.

Australia’s participation in the EU Framework Program is underpinned and reinforced by its strong bilateral research cooperation links with a number of EU Member States.
